This time of year is kind of fun for crafty people, but kinda not fun, all at the same time.  We get to make all sorts of goodies for people but we can’t tell anyone about any of it!  It’s all CIA-levels of secrecy, all the time.  And where’s the fun in that??? On that note, I can’t tell you much of what I’ve been working on.  But there are a few things: I went to a yoga workshop a few weeks ago and my friend Mairi (Yoga Instructor Extraordinaire) brought along all the large kapok bolsters I sewed for her over the spring.  Then, because she is worth her weight in gold, she spent the weekend telling everyone who used one that I made them for her, which resulted in a whole slew of new business for me.  See …

When I quit my “grown-up” job last fall, the intention was to begin work right away on my business plan for my new dream: a mini woollen mill.  Now, you might not understand what I mean by “woollen mill” or maybe it’s just the “mini” part that you’re unclear on, so I thought I’d explain a bit more about that. You see, I have some wonderful amazing (because neither of those adjectives does them justice on their own) friends who live in Belfast, PE.  They manufacture fibre processing equipment and ship it all over the world.  Yeah, like ALL OVER.  As of this writing, their products sit in 190 different mills in 30+ different countries.  There’s a waiting list for new equipment. Their products are in such high demand not because they have reinvented the wheel (fibre processing hasn’t changed …

One of the best things about living in PEI is the outdoors.  We spend a lot of time outside, walking the dogs.  Specifically, on the beach.  And though our beaches tend to be pretty tidy (just don’t get me started on the styrofoam buoy litter), they do occasionally present some pretty interesting natural finds.  After 8 years of consistent beach rambling, we’ve amassed a really diverse collection of skulls/bones, shells, glass, ceramic, wood and feathers. We’ve actually kind of morphed into naturalists, without having intended it. The problem with all of this is that we live in a minuscule home – most of our treasures were hidden away, which was just a shame.  What we needed was a curio cabinet. So I called my pal Heather (over at Birdmouse) and she came to the rescue:     I actually had …

That basket up there?  I made that.  Along with 3 others, in the hopes of selling them at the Cardigan Farmers’ Market this summer, and when that didn’t happen, in the hopes that I could contain some of the madness that is my fibre/materials stash. So far, they’re working, but I’m thinking that I actually need something a little different for some of my other supplies (namely: painting supplies). Those paper-wrapped parcels contained if aforementioned basket are my newest paintings, fresh from the framing store.  As you know, I’ve been madly painting and otherwise keeping myself occupied in the past few weeks.  My part-time (seasonal) jobs are all finished for the year and the garden is wrapping up (though I still managed to harvest a huge bowlful of basil again yesterday – the tradeoff for all of that crazy winter …

When I decided to start my own business, I had no idea where to begin.  I knew that I would focus on sewing and fine art, with some workshops interspersed here and there.  That part was ok.  But I have never built a company from the ground up: how are you supposed to do that? The first major hurdle I encountered was: what to call it?  If you’re going to walk around, describing your new business to folks, it really helps to leave them with a name to chew on.  Given that I was going to be online and given just how small the world has gotten because of the internet, I knew I wanted to imbue this thing with a sense of place.  That meant it had to make you think of a) Canada and b) more specifically, the …

Am I the only one who has more ideas than time?   This horse (above) inspires me to start a new series or project and I just don’t know if I have the time to get it done (this particular project involves a timeline that I would have to respect or else there is no point in attempting it…wow, that sounds really mysterious, doesn’t it?). Sure, we’ve been to the moon and eradicated smallpox, but why haven’t we figured out how to freeze time, yet?   Someone needs to get on that, stat. PS: I’ll settle for SLOWING DOWN time, if that helps.
